Artist Statement

The objects are familiar in form, but through re-materiality, modularity, and scale, our understanding of the function of the objects transforms. The objects and spaces are non-prescriptive in their function. This ambiguity allows the objects to adapt to different spaces, activities, and needs. The objects are playful, and the end use is free from expectations. Each piece should force the viewer to rework their understanding of the object they are looking at and reconstruct it—a significant mental process made complicated by design.

Color and texture are pivotal to the work. Plush comfortable materials and forms are used to visually stimulate and create a desire for interaction. By using bright colors, bold patterns, and by contrasting matte and metallic finish, the forms have depth and dimension. By using print, fabric manipulation, and varied surface textures, the forms morph, camouflage, and distort. These objects are expressive—flamboyant—through intricacy and detail. I find satisfaction in repetition in both the making process and within the patterns and objects themselves.

I’m interested in how things are assembled and connected in simple, adjustable, and customizable ways. I want the objects and environments to provoke play, alter the perception and the relationship with a form and space. Sensation and connection are enhanced through consideration of every part of an experience and interaction with an object and space. I believe craft and an understanding of how things are fabricated, produced, and where they are sourced from, is important to the production process as well as the end result. Process and materials are crucial to the concept, help develop ideas, and solve problems.
